The thing is this is just art still committed to the dealer-critic-gallery model that defines the contemporary art world, which in the last 2 decades got aggressively optimized to the point of being a purely cynical pseudo-art financial complex, and merged entirely with the MFA university pipeline, critics killed and replaced fully with planted press, no pressure on artists to actually do engaging art, rather than just produce brand work following their agent’s guidance with just enough pretense of depth that can be pitched to give plausibility to the paid praise secured to prop up a market between the dealer and gallerist. That’s why it feels so empty and dead, because it is; and that’s why the new art is not art to any insider, because art is just whatever can be productized in the institutional complex known as “the art world”, and the new net art is not just a rabid guerrilla outsider, but invisible to their own incentive matrix— they don’t care at all about pioneering art itself, this was a job for the few rare independent critics, who have all been starved to death after 15 years of only dead art.
