Yesterday afternoon I attended an AI salon titled “Can You Beat AI? — A Creativity Showdown Between Humans and LLMs.” The professor presented a paper from last year: through fixed prompts and large-scale field sampling (tens of thousands of participants, including left-behind children in rural areas), human responses were compared with outputs from ten state-of-the-art language models (including DeepSeek released last January), all scored algorithmically. The conclusion: creativity is roughly the same — AI performs on par with ordinary people. “Has AI ever eaten an apple?” This question stuck with me. Language models can easily generate the word apple, but AI has never actually eaten one. The professor, who transitioned from art to psychology to AI research, used this to introduce a human-centered perspective. He gently told the audience not to be too anxious — but some things don’t change based on reassurance alone. When applied at scale, AI replaces average labor the fastest. One audience member asked: How will society deal with the ‘useless class’ in the future? That’s a very East Asian way of framing it. In the near future, human-AI collaboration is far more likely than total replacement. The job market won’t offer as many “generic” roles anymore, but roles that carry responsibility will remain essential. When something goes wrong, accountability has to land somewhere — and it won’t be on a machine. From that perspective, the human node is still irreplaceable.
